The View co-host Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), called for President Joe Biden to fire Dr. Anthony Facui on Monday’s show. The TV commentator shared a clip of Fauci on CNN’s State of the Union from this past weekend, and then expressed the frustration with the state of the vaccines in the country for the novel coronavirus.
Ms. McCain was upset that Dr. Facui has been unable to provide more concrete details on when a vaccine will be available to the general public. She also took aim at President Biden.
“The fact that I, Meghan McCain, co-host of The View, don’t know when or how I will be able to get a vaccine because the rollout for my age range and my health is so nebulous, I have no idea when and how I get it,” McCain said. “I want to get it. If you call me at three o’clock in the morning, I will go any place at any time to get it.
“I want to be responsible and obviously wait my turn, but this rollout has been a disaster,” she added. “And I understand President Trump can take much of the blame, but now we’re in the Biden administration and I, for one, would like something to look forward to and to hope for because if getting the vaccine means that just nothing changes and we have to wait another few years until everyone gets it, there’s already a lot of people not getting it.”
The comments resulted in a brief debate on The View, but it was on Twitter and across social media in general where the sparks truly began to fly. By late morning and into the early afternoon, Meghan McCain was out-trending Meghan Markle – a not insignificant feat right now.
Many viewers called out McCain for questioning Dr. Fauci on the topic of “science.”
Media Matters for America Editor at Large Parker Molloy (@ParkerMolloy) responded to McCain’s comments directly, “I hereby propose that Meghan McCain be the last person in the U.S. allowed to get the vaccine. It’s only fair.”
Shannon Watts (@shannonrwatts), founder of Moms Demand Action, also questioned McCain’s comments on the issue, “Meghan McCain is spewing disinformation again on #TheView. Dr. Fauci didn’t say we’ll have to wear masks forever, but if we’d worn them to begin with and gone into lockdown – like Israel did on Jan. 8 – maybe we wouldn’t have so much sickness.”
Cancel Culture Strikes Again
Sure enough, many users jumped into fray and called for her firing from the show.
Heathcare advocate Kendall Brown (@kendallybrown) also called out McCain’s privilege, “Meghan McCain has been wealthy her entire life. She’s actively opposed growing social safety net programs that would benefit low-income and disabled people, out of fear it might marginally impact her massive wealth. So of course she’s upset to not be first in line for a vaccine.”
Proclaimed “Emperor of Hair” Elgin Charles (@ElginCharles) posted, “The producers of @TheView need to fire Meghan McCain, NOW!! Her daily tantrums, total disregard for the opinions of others, and willful ignorance is exhausting. Replace her with Ana Navarro.”
Writer and justice advocate Joyce Hutchens (@JoyceHutchens3) was direct, posting, “Why…oh why is Meghan McCain trending…again? Please make this lady begone.”
It is still fascinating that some of the responses to Ms. McCain’s comments literally address the “opinions of others” but call for her termination from the show. Isn’t her job to create a lively debate – and this has been a show where opinions of the hosts regularly result in fiery debates.
It is true that McCain could be seen as out of touch, especially as she did make it seem that her role as a co-host of a TV talk show should be rewarded – not to mention the fact that she is just 36 years of age, and many seniors are still waiting to get their vaccinations. However, the larger point that we don’t know when things will return to return to normal, and for daring to ask now Ms. McCain is being called out for it.
